Journalist Bryant Gumbel says, “Magic and Bird Saved the NBA, not Michael Jordan.” As the subject of a New York Times Best Selling book, “When the Game was Ours,” and also HBO’s must-watch documentary Magic & Bird: A Courtship of Rivals, Magic and Bird’s relationship is one that is centered around their competitiveness but grounded unwillingness to admit that they are mirrors of each other.
The movie traces the rivalry between Magic Johnson and Larry Bird, from its inception 30 years ago in a championship NCAA game between Michigan State and Indiana State. In an interview with NBA.com, HBO Sports president Ross Greenburg said, “I think the casual sports fan and the non-sports fan will learn so much from this film.”
“It’s because it really is more a love story than basketball story.”
