Chris Newsome: Ateneo’s latest recruit

The Ateneo basketball pool just keeps growing, and the Norman Black era looks to be reaping even more success (a la Sir Alex Ferguson perhaps).

Last summer it was Smart Gilas big-man, Greg Slaughter, now the Blue Eagles have their hands on another Fil-Am player–Chris Newsome.

According to reports from the Philippine Star and the Philippine Daily Inquirer, Newsome gained the attention of the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinos during previous batches of the national youth team, and is one of the players that Ateneo and Philippine national team head coach, Norman Black, is considering for the Southeast Asian games in November.

A 6′ 2″ Guard for the New Mexico Highlands University in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference of the US NCAA Division II, Newsome averages 9.1 points, 4.1 rebounds, 2.8 assists, and 1.8 steals with New Mexico.

After serving his residency–due to UAAP regulations–Newsome is expected to suit up for the Blue Eagles in 2013, with two years of playing eligibility.

Here is a good article about the new recruit written by his hometown newspaper, take note of how they misspelled Ateneo “Ataneo” haha
